Chow colors

the loci for color in the Chow Chow breed

All Chow Chows have probably BB on the B-locus, hh on the H-locus, mm on the M-locus, SS on the S-locus and tt on the T-locus.

The other loci for the different Chow Chow colors are:

black smooth Chow Chow

black

A-locus: all combinations of ay and a
K-locus: KBKB or KBky
E-locus: EE or Ee
D-locus: DD or Dd

red smooth Chow Chow

red

A-locus: ayay or aya
K-locus: kyky
E-locus: EE or Ee
D-locus: DD or Dd

blue smooth Chow Chow

blue

A-locus: all combinations of ay and a
K-locus: KBKB or KBky
E-locus: EE or Ee
D-locus: dd
Two of the six blue Chow Chows that were DNA tested on color were Dd on the D-locus, this suggests that there should be an other locus for coat dillution in Chows.

fawn smooth Chow Chow

fawn (cinnamon)

A-locus: ayay or aya
K-locus: kyky
E-locus: EE or Ee
D-locus: dd

cream smooth Chow Chow

cream

A-locus: all combinations of ay and a
K-locus: all combinations of KB and ky
E-locus: ee
D-locus: all combinations of D and d
It could be that dillution makes a cream somewhat lighter in color.

recessive black en blue

(If this allele exists in Chow Chows, this would provide a logical explanation for a few cases of black Chow Chows born out of red parents and possibly for the very rare light blue color. This allele definitely exists in dogs)
A-locus: aa
K-locus: kk
E-locus: EE or Ee
D-locus: DD or Dd for black and dd for blue

white

(is one of the colors named in the FCI standard, personally I have never seen a pure white Chow Chow, they always have a bit darker ears, so they are cream. However when recessive black exists this form of white would be possible in the Chow Chow breed and thus explaining the existance of the illusive white Chow Chow)
A-locus: aa
K-locus: all combinations of KB and ky
E-locus: ee
D-locus: all combinations of D and d

Thanks to Peter Wellinga who provided the photos of the fawn and blue smooth Chow Chows and John Philips for Lili's photo, his cream smooth Chow Chow.
